Health Programme

Poverty and health are adversely related to each other. Poverty gets dejected with the improvement of health. It is quite impossible to make overall development without the improvement of health sector. SSS promised to build a society free of poverty and hunger.  It always bears a positive point of view for ensuring healthiness of the target people and sustaining their development. SSS started implementing Health Program from 1996 in order to provide health services  to the destitute and trailing people of the society at a very nominal or free of cost.

Goal and Policy

SSS continues its journey for the fulfillment of health related basic needs and establishment of universal healthcare. In order to ensure well-planned and modern healthcare, SSS implements its health program under the following objectives and policies:

  • Making target people aware of food-nutrition, health services, diseases etc. through different meetings, seminars and trainings;
  • Extending health services to the doorstep of people through static and satellite clinics;
  • Ensuring safe motherhood, health development and normal growth of children and adolescents;
  • Providing necessary healthcare to neglected, vulnerable and destitute children, adolescents and old people.
  • Providing healthcare services via emergency medical camps during disasters.

Implemented Programs and Activities

During 2016-17, SSS has implemented following programs and activities under the health program with a view to ensuring the healthiness and normal lives the target people:

SSS Hospital

SSS Hospital started its journey in 1998. Later, the building of SSS Hospital was established at Tangail in 2000. The goal of the hospital is to provide modern quality healthcare to the doorstep of the target people at a nominal cost. This government-registered hospital has 50 beds. Patients get a number of healthcare including general, gynecology, child, medicine and physiotherapy. Preventive, curative and operative–this tri-method has been followed for treatment based on the nature of patients and diseases. A group of specialized doctors provide overall healthcare services in the hospital.

Eye Department

SSS operates a full-fledged Eye Department in a separate building under SSS Hospital. Eye department has been well-equipped with modern medical  instruments with financial support from TdH-Netherlands. There are reliable facilities of computerized eye examination, well-equipped operation theatre and proper eye treatment in case of any problem in eyes. Here the patients get both operative and non-operative eye treatment under the superintendence of an eye specialist.


Primary Healthcare Program

SSS started primary healthcare activities from January 1996. Presently, SSS has been implementing the program in 25 branches under Tangail and Kurigram district with its own funding. Besides, the activities are being implemented in five branches under Nation-building through Eradicating Malnutrition (NEM) program and in four branches under ENRICH program. The goal of the program is to provide group members with healthcare and medical services at a low or nominal cost.  The program is running under overall support of specialist doctors of SSS Hospital. A medical assistant is engaged in each of the branches in the working area. Activities of primary healthcare program include:

  • Providing primary healthcare to members and borrowers every morning at the group level;
  • Providing primary healthcare to members and borrowers at the branch offices from 2 pm to 5 pm;
  • Organizing at least one medical camp every month under each of the branches;
  • Making target people conscious of health and diseases through meetings and workshops; and
  • Providing referral facilities when necessary.

Result Review

According to the theme, objectives and planning of SSS health program, achievements of the same during 2016-17 are presented below:

Direct Services of SSS Hospital: In 2016-2017, a total of 9,432 patients were directly treated from SSS Hospital. Under disease-wise classification, 3,996 were gynecological, 525 cardiac, 597 pediatric, 935 medicine, 1,024 physiotherapy, 508 eye patients, 1,117 antenatal and 730 postnatal. The given information has been analyzed in Figure-3.1.

On the other hand, 1,117 among the total patients received operative treatments. Among the operative patients, 723 were gynecological, 99 eye patients and 295 general surgical patients. The given information is presented in Figure-3.2.

Health Camp: In order to make its healthcare services available to the group members and common people, SSS has been implementing some work-strategies. Arranging free health camps is one of them. During 2016-17, a total of 20 health camps were organized in Dainna and Bahadurshadi union. Among them, four were gynecological, four eye, four rheumatic, four ENT, and four dermatological and sex camps. Specialized doctors of SSS Hospital provided necessary treatment in these camps.

A total of 1,711 patients got healthcare services in the health camps. Among them, 176 were children, 1,240 women and 295 men.

Static and Mobile Clinic: As on 30 June 2017, SSS has been operating 34 sub-health centers at the field level. Among them, 25 are under primary healthcare program, five under NEM and four sub-health centers are operated under ENRICH program. During 2016-17, as many as 11,904 static and 14,091 mobile clinics have been arranged under the centers. A total of 92,409 were direct beneficiaries. Among them, 5,184 were children, 71,860 women and 15,365 men. Information related to static and mobile clinics are presented in Figure-3.3.

Achievement of Health and Healthiness Related Special Activities

SSS has been implementing a number of activities in order to ensure future healthiness and development of target people along with providing direct healthcare under its health program. Achievements of main activities are presented below:

Services to Pregnant and Parturient Mothers: SSS puts special emphasis on pregnant and parturient mothers in every sector of its health program. Pregnant and progenitress are provided with overall assistance, necessary counsels and services on food nutrition, discipline, health check up, healthcare, vitamin “A” capsule intake, immunization and delivery.

In 2016-2017, a total of 2,788 pregnant and 1,589 parturient mothers were provided with necessary services. Presently, 1,199 pregnant mother are kept under regular check up. During the reporting period, A total of 1,589 mothers got TT vaccination. Besides, 659 mothers received caesarean and 990 received normal delivery services. As a result, mortality rate of pregnant and parturient mothers has dynamically decreased in the working area.


Deworming Activities: SSS has been implementing deworming activities with a view to building a disease-free and productive nation. In this respect, all members of the families excluding pregnant and parturient mothers and infants of 1 to 2 years of age were fed anthelminthics every six months in the working area. In 2016-2017, a total of 39,224 persons were fed with anthelminthics under the activities. Of them 16,095 were female, 15,285 male and 7,844 children.

Family Planning Activities: Forming well-planned families is the pre-requisite of building a happy and enriched nation. As a strategy of activities, fertile couples are motivated through group meetings and courtyard sittings in the working area. They are advised and made aware of adopting different methods of family planning, the advantages of small families, risk of big families etc in these meetings and sittings. A total of 432 group meetings and courtyard sittings have been arranged with 10,260 fertile members during the reporting period.


Nutrition Related Activities: Alleviating malnutrition from the society is one of the most important activities of SSS. Under the activities, malnutrition level of all children ranging from 0-3 years of age was monitored. Age and physical growth method is followed in this respect. During 2016-2017, nutrition level of 7,844 children have been monitored. Among them, 152 have been suffering from terrible malnutrition, 1,434 from malnutrition and 3,511 are suffering partially. Based on their nutrition level, the concerned families received necessary counsels and support.

Expanded Program on Immunization and NID Activities: As an agent of the government, SSS implements expanded program on immunization and NID activities in the selected area. All children aging from 0-5 years have been brought under the activities. As a result the anti-body in children has increased and consciousness of people has also accelerated. In 2016-2017, a total of 1,729 children were vaccinated whereas 3,750 children were fed with vitamin ‘A’ capsule under the activities.

Anemia Prevention Activities: Owing to malnutrition, food and healthcare related mismanagement, many people suffer from Anemia-related diseases. Medical assistants of SSS check up anemia at nominal charges in the working area. They also provide necessary counsels, prescriptions and other supports to the patients.

During 2016-2017, a total of 238 families were made aware and encouraged to defend anemia. Among them, 5,000 family members received free iron and folic acid tablets and diet sheet. 38,000 families were made aware of malnutrition, food and healthcare.

Safe Drinking Water and Sanitation Activities: Safe drinking water and sanitary sewerage system is the main context for living a normal and vigorous life. Under the program, target families are provided with microcredit to install tube-wells and sanitary latrines. The families have been benefitted by using sanitary latrines and drinking safe water and leading a normal and problem-free life.

In 2016-2017, a total of 38,000 families were made aware of and encouraged  about the importance and necessity of safe drinking water and sanitation. During the last year, 41 families installed deep tube-wells whereas 95 families adopted sanitary sewerage system.

Training Activities: During the reporting period, SSS organized two-batch training on primary healthcare and nutrition. Four medical assistants and 27 CHVs participated in the training.

Besides, 362 TBAs received skill development training on child birth every month.
